President's Welcome

Dear Nebraska ASHRAE Members,

I would like to thank everyone who attended the September meeting on data centers last month.  We had good attendance and I hope we see our meeting attendance grow month-to-month.  Please encourage other co-workers, colleagues, and friends throughout the industry to attend our monthly meetings.  Please also remember that Professional Development Hours (PDH) are available at each meeting.

This month we’re blessed to have our own Tim Wentz share his knowledge on ASHRAE’s Building Energy Label Program (bEQ).  bEQ is a building energy rating program that provides information on a building’s energy use.  Two separate workbooks, one evaluating “As Designed” potential and the other assessing “In Operation” performance, form the foundation of bEQ.

The benefits of bEQ include:

  • Consistent analysis of a building’s potential energy efficiency and actual energy performance.
  • Comparison of a building’s performance with similar building in similar climates.
  • Informed decisions for managing a building’s energy use.
  • Recommendations for reducing energy use while screening for indoor environmental quality.
  • Potential for ongoing improvement in energy efficiency.
  • Illustrated benefit for making building equipment and system investments.
  • Building label, which demonstrates corporate responsibility to employees, tenants, investors, and the public.
  • Ability to track and show the effectiveness of your improvements.

Through the bEQ process, qualified practitioners can compare the bEQ selected building’s performance with similar building types.  Since the bEQ offers a consistent methodology, building with an owner’s real estate portfolio can be compared against each other and they can be re-evaluated over time to see if the improvements are getting the expected energy savings and performance results.  These comparisons enable owners to invest financial resources in their building in ways that will provide the greatest return.

I hope you all are able to come learn more from Tim Wentz about bEQ. bEQ has ASHRAE’s full support and I believe it will be more and more common in our industry as the years move forward.  I’d like to see the Nebraska ASHRAE professionals be leaders in this new program.
