President's Welcome

Dear Nebraska ASHRAE Members,

As the holidays are upon us, it is timely to discuss the benefits of donating to ASHRAE Research. It is my goal to highlight how ASHRAE research dollars are spent and the impact they have not only to our entire industry, but also how they support local research.

ASHRAE has been supporting research since 1919. The most significant ASHRAE research has been in the areas of human comfort and the properties of materials and systems used in building and refrigeration systems. As the colder weather is upon us, below are just a few ASHRAE research projects helping us survive the winter:

· Development of an ASHRAE Design Manual for District Heating and Cooling Systems

· Establishing Benchmark Levels and Patterns of Commercial Building Hot Water Use

· Research to Support the Revision to Ground Source Heat Pump: Design of Geothermal Systems for Commercial and Institutional Buildings

· Development and Evaluation of Novel Membrane Liquid Desiccant Air Conditioning Systems for Hot-Humid and Cold-Dry Climate

The results of such research projects are used to update the annual volumes of the ASHRAE Handbook, described through articles in the ASHRAE Journal, or published as special publication including the Advanced Energy Design Guidelines.

By donating to ASHRAE research and having strong research institutions within the state of Nebraska, we’re able to have an excellent return on our research investment. Currently there are three projects in the state funded by ASHRAE research dollars. The projects include:

· 1462 – RP: Active Mechanism for Enhancing Heat and Mass Transfer in Sorption Fluids - $143,169

· 1475 – RP: Updating Heat and Moisture Production Rates of Modern Swine and their Housing Systems - $180,000

· 1565 – RP: Development of the ASHRAE Design Guideline for Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems - $135,349

It is nice to know that our chapter’s annual donation of approximately $20,000 is returning over $450,000 in research activity.

This year the Nebraska Chapter’s Research Promotion committee is let by Shaun Nienhueser and Dave Kros. If you would like to make an end of the year contribution to ASHRAE please contact either Shaun at or Dave at I hope this holiday season when you are thinking of how you can give back to your local community, you again think about donating to ASHRAE Research.
